Lake Mendota

11:00 AM. Assemble at Hoofers boathouse. Preparations were intense that morning... everyone cooperated in a massive effort to launch six boats: one J22, three Badger Sloops, and two Tech Dinghies. Two of the three Badger Sloops had just arrived that morning, and had never been sailed. This AMANDA expedition was their maiden voyage!

11:50 AM. All boats launched. Light winds at first, which increased to a brisk 12 mph over the next couple hours.

Roll Call

The J22: John Kirsch (skipper), Dima Chirkin, Peter Niessen, Philip Olbrechts, and Marek Kowalski. This boat (being so much bigger and faster than the rest of us) disappeared across the lake and was not seen until much later. Sadly, no pictures were obtained of their voyages.

The Kiddie Badger Sloop: Katherine Rawlins (skipper), Till Neunhoffer, Tom Feser, and Marc Hohlfeld.

<-- Till waves from the foredeck.

The Non-Physicists Badger Sloop: D.J. Pisano (skipper), Darryn Schneider, and Helen Smith.

The P.I. Badger Sloop: Per-Olof Hulth (skipper), Albrecht Karle, Jody Schimek, and Yulia Minaeva.

<-- They found the wind!

The AmaTech: Stephan Hundertmark and Gary Hill. (Watch your head, Gary!)

Peter Steffen's One-Man Tech: tearing through the waves like a pro.

Brave crewmembers all:
Lead by example, Admiral, and zip up your lifejacket.
"Team Stockholm", better practice for 2002!
The Mainz boys...
...are up to no good, I'm sure.

Close encounters:

Look out, Per-Olof... I think the Kiddie Sloop is catching up behind you.

2:20 PM All boats return safely to the Hoofers pier. No capsizes, collisions, or overboards reported (this time).

Group photo after a hard day's work play:

3:00 PM... And then relax on the terrace.

Many special thanks to:
D.J. Pisano (UW Astronomy department)
John Kirsch (Hoofers sailing instructor)
Per-Olof for skippering the third sloop
Till, Darryn, Albrecht, and Gary for helping organize volunteers, lockers, sunscreen, liability waivers, and lifejackets
...and to the weather for cooperating.
